Tent City 2010

Tent City flier

Across the country, tent cities are springing up in neglected neighborhoods where jobs and educational resources are at an all time low. The state of California’s tremendous budget crisis is leading to huge cuts in education spending, and the consequences are too big to go unnoticed. Tuition is up, admissions are down, classes grow impacted, programs are slashed, and important staff and faculty are being laid off. For many Californians, this is the difference between having a college education and not.

Tent City is symbolic of the future faced by those left to the mercy of the economy, without educational resources. It represents how we can no longer overlook poverty, and how we must re-evaluate our priorities. Most importantly, it shows how we as students and workers, the unemployed and unable to get necessary classes, come together to build a community that works to challenge these problems.

Our main goal is to promote the March 4th Day of Action @ De Anza, as well as the protest and rally in San Francisco being spearheaded by De Anza. We wish to sign up 1000+ people for buses and carpools leaving De Anza on March 4th.

Daily activities will include: eating, study sessions, workshops, discussions on various issues, chillin, freezing, etc. :)

EVERYONE is expected to participate. Mostly importantly, have fun. This is an AWESOME event.

If you or your friends are interested in participating, please email Matt Bradley (matthew42187@gmail.com), and request a waiver. Return the signed waiver to one of the Tent City organizers when you first arrive to the tents!

——————————————————————————–
We are NOT about to guarantee tent space, and urge all people participating to bring or borrow a tent. Please be willing to share your tent with others. More information on accommodations will be available in the coming days.

If you have a tent, or have a tent you can borrow, please let us know.

Other important information:
- NO ALCOHOL, OR WEED IS ALLOWED. You will be asked to leave.

There will be campus police parked 20 to 30 yards away, and we don’t want anyone acting like a *DUMB ASS* and getting busted because it would detract from the purpose of our event.

- If able, please bring a food item you are willing to share with the group. Please, no food that will spoil without a fridge.

- Guests are allowed, however they have to abide by the rules of tent city and sign a waiver acknowledging that no alcohol or illegal substances are permitted. *Please e-mail the admins if you wish to bring guests.*

- Donations gladly accepted, and will go towards food sharing.

First General Assembly at De Anza

Introduction:On a Thursday November 19th from 3:30 to 8:30pm at the Conference Rm A, around 70 individuals gathered to organize against the budget cuts. This individuals represented faculty and students. Some were representatives from clubs while others were getting involved for the first time. But they all had a common goal: To save their education. The General Assembly is the means to which this will be achieved. Just like in UC Berkeley students, campus workers, and faculty gather and collectively discuss and take action against the cuts, so is De Anza college.Decisions of the General Assembly:-After much intense discussion the following resolution has been made:-A walkout and a flash mob(for those who don’t want to walk out) will be organized on January 13th.-A March to Sacramento will be organized on March 4th(State-wide Day of action vs the Budget cuts)-The General Assembly will operate as a centralized committee with sub-committees within in order to organize said actions.(Coordinating/Logistics committee, Arts committee, media committee)The General Assembly will meet again on Wednesday from 12:30pm to 4:30pm at the Conference Rm A.

SSCCC picks terrible date for the march in Sacramento vs the budget cuts

I think you should all be aware that SSCCC(Student Senate of Community Colleges of California) has set March 22nd as the date for the March in Sacramento against the budget cuts.It should be be known that on March 22nd the Foothill/De Anza district will have finals will not be able to attend the march (and so would any other school in the quarter system) . I also would like to share that on October 24th, a decision was made at a statewide conference in UC Berkely to have a WALKOUT/ DAY OF ACTION on March 4th. Representatives from UCs, CSUs, CCs and K-12 voted for the ACTION to take place on MARCH 4th.I hope that you share this concern. We need to fight the budget cuts united as one! Please take the time to post a comment on their link…http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=186572474039&ref=ts

budget-cuts-flier.jpgThursday November 19thFrom: 3:30pm to 8:30pmAt De Anza College, Conference room A&BNovember 19 General Assembly at De AnzaPurpose and explanation of the General Assembly:Budget cuts are a huge problem. In order to campaign against the budget cuts all schools must act in a unified manner, campaign against the budget cuts, and bring out our own demands and solutions. With this Purpose a State-Wide conference was held on October 24 in UC Berkeley. Around 800 individuals assisted representing different Student groups and Unions at UC, CSU, CC, and K-12 level. The following decision was reached after a long democratic process: All schools are to call for General Assembly in order to campaign against the budget cuts, Solidarity action with UCs will be taken from November 17-19, and March 4th will be a State-Wide Walkout/Day of Action.A General assembly is a democratic body were all participants are equal and have the right to vote. The purpose of having one in our campus is to involve as many De Anza individuals and organizations in the struggle against budget cuts in general. In the General Assembly we discuss and organize a successful March 4th Walkout/Day of Action.
